Ages 1-3, during the 11:00 Mass. We are currently looking for a few more families to rotate the responsibility of the Nursery. The goal is to have one "lead" person in charge each week with 1-2 additional adults as helpers. The program has been a great success in the past and it is our hope that it can continue. Nursery meets every weekend, with the exception of holiday weekends. Parents will be asked to help in the Nursery about once a month. Nursery will be in the Preschool Classroom in the Parish Hall. $30 fee per child for the year. All parents will have to fill out a background check in order to assist in the Nursery.
Ages 3-4, during the 11:00 Mass. For safety reasons, we are asking that this year children come to the (3rd grade) classroom before Mass begins. We will use "Let the Children Come" series of Bible stories, which was very successful last year. The first few weeks the children will learn about God's First Friends in the Old Testament. The rest of the year will focus on the life of Jesus, beginning with Christmas and continuing through Easter. Classes center around a playtime, bible story, snack and a project. Children will receive a handout for themselves and parents to go with each lesson. Teachers are still needed for this program!! $30 fee per child.
Ages 5-6, in Kindergarten or First Grade. Children come to Mass with their family, are dismissed at the beginning of Mass, and picked up in the school (first grade classroom) after Mass. Our wonderful preschool teachers, Jeanette Howard and Marion Kari, are returning this year to begin this new program. Children will use "Discover the Good News" materials, from the same publisher as "Let the Children Come." We are excited to provide a program for this age level. $30 fee per child.
This class is for children in second grade or above who do not attend Catholic school and wish to make their first communion in the spring of 2007. Classes are held in the DeMazenod Room between the two morning Masses, 9:45-10:45. In addition to the classes, the children will attend two Saturday morning retreats with their parents. Parents attend a total of four parent gatherings, held in the evenings. First Sacrament children should also register for Magnifikids, as this will greatly enhance their love for the Eucharist at this important time. $30 fee per child.
Ages 6-11, 11:00 Mass, all children, whatever school they attend. This is Children's Liturgy of the Word. Children come to Mass with their family and are dismissed at the beginning of Mass and will return at the Offertory. Magnifikids! is accompanied by a wonderful worship aid by the same name, which includes the order and readings for the Mass every week, family ideas and support for parents in passing the faith on to their children. A monthly parent newsletter is available in the back of the church, next to the OLG Faith Formation Newsletter. Mia Sazón and Rich Rayos are our leaders. Please consider a $10 donation to help defray the cost of the weekly Magnifikids magazine.
Throughout the year, there will be no classes the first Sunday of the month, or on "big" holiday weekends, like Veterans' Day. Nursery will meet every week except holidays. Check the calendar for specific dates. We encourage families to attend the entire Mass together once a month because it helps your children learn not just about the Mass, but to love it and see it as the best way to become closer to God. The more accustomed they become to Mass, the more they will understand and the better they will behave. You could take a first Sunday and go to Mass with relatives in another parish, visit the Cathedral, or visit a new church on an out-of-town visit. Use your imagination to make Sunday a different, special family day!
